Me: I'm going to vote for Obama.
C2: Why?
Me: Because he's really smart, and he's a good guy, and he believes in a lot of the things I believe in.
C2, with a grin: Does he believe in mermaids?

mermaids?

I'm with Casey. This country needs a good dose of optimism!

I believe I can hear her voice saying that!

I remember Stevie telling me that GWHBush would be a better choice for President than Dukakis, because Bush was a better Presidential name. President Dukakis sounded funny.

The sad thing is, that's how the typical Amerikan voter thinks.

"HE BELIEVES IN KILLING THEM AND BURYING THEM IN THE PARK! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

*I wonder why I have no kids...

Man, she would have totally loved that answer.

At least she is making her decision based on the policies. The lad is just knee-jerk contrarian. I pointed out Rudd and Howard on the election day coverage, and explained what an election was. He said, "Who are you going for?" "Rudd", I answered, pointing. And he yelled, "Then I going for HOWARD! HAHAHAH!"

Soooo not funny.

Casey did that to me with Mariners vs. Yankees for a couple of weeks last fall. I was surprised at how really really unfunny I found it.

Sports vs. politics, not the same thing, of course. But when I'm taking you to a ballgame? When I've been taking you to ballgames your whole life? When we've been cheering for the same team that whole time? Actually not so cute.

It was like a punch in the gut. I'm going to have to get over that, right?

It's funny. I was really surprised at my reaction to Casey's Yankee fandom. It really did feel like a betrayal, in a strange way. So after a while, I just said to her: "Casey, if you're serious about this, if the Yankees really are your favorite team, that's fine. You can have whatever favorites you want. But if you're saying it as a joke, then it feels like you're teasing me, and it really hurts my feelings. You and I have had a lot of fun watching the Mariners together, and you saying that you don't like them anymore makes me sad."

She got that immediately, and there wasn't any drama involved. She just dropped the whole Yankees thing completely.

I feel weird mentioning this, because sports fandom is such a silly, petty thing --- and it's not even my thing, really. I'm so not a passionate sports guy. And clearly she was practicing distinguishing herself from me, in what by any reasonable measure is a pretty innocuous way, so it definitely felt weird to me to squelch that.

But at the same time, something about the dynamic was making me feel bad, and in an ongoing way. (If it'd just been a one-day conceit on her part, it'd have been fine.) And I guess because it clearly was a game for her, I felt like that gave me license to tell her that it wasn't a fun game for me.

I've written before about how she's surprised me when I've asked her for something I felt like I shouldn't be asking for. I haven't made it a habit, and I don't intend to, but there have been two or three times so far that I've come to her for a real favor, and so far she's always come through.

I've been wavering for a while, but I realized at the Apollo fundraiser that whatever I thought I was thinking, it was never in doubt where I'd eventually land.

There's a lot that frustrates me about Obama, and a few things that piss me off. On policy, Edwards is definitely a better fit. (And I don't really have many complaints about Clinton as a senator, in spite of my policy disagreements with her.) But yeah, it's going to be Obama for me.
